AN INTERVIEW WITH
DICHOTOMY ARTS
Spring 2023
What do you sell/make?
I am a 2D traditional full-time artist! I create highly detailed
gothic and surreal ink drawings with fine-tipped pens. My original
pieces are typically macabre in theme, and are always completed in
black and white. They often feature extensive and intricate linework
and/or stippling, with a recognizably powerful and gothic style that I
translate over to my frequently-taken commission work!

Tell me about yourself as a creator!
My name is Kaitlyn Maddox, I'm 20 years old and currently based in the
Florida panhandle. Gothic fashion, style, art, and décor have always
been a stylish and cultural constant in my life, so when deciding to
take the plunge into doing art and creating full-time, it was no
surprise that the majority of my work featured pieces that were
beautifully dreadful. I devote hours to my craft on a daily basis,
with my most favorite things to create usually being in the realm of
surreal fantasy with some creepy undertones. While a large portion of
my business and time goes into conjuring up original pieces for sale,
an even larger portion goes into completing commission work for my
clients, with the most common request being complex tattoo designs
that I create!

What do you hope to accomplish with this business/commission work?
I truthfully hope to see a rise in popularity in my work being found
and sold via my online marketplace. That way, my work is brought to
life in the world not only through the form of prints, but through
stylish clothing, stickers on notebooks, morning coffee cups, comfort
blankets, and travel bags. I love the idea of the pieces I create
making their way into the public and becoming a daily part of the
lives of other people, just as much as they are mine. I became an
artist with the intent of leaving behind a universe of work that was
all my own, that would far outlast myself, which is additionally why I
will soon be looking into pursuing a tattoo apprenticeship, so that I
can not only create the tattoo concept, but place my work upon clients
myself as something meaningful that they can keep forever, an
extension of myself.
Where do you sell/where can people commission you? (art festivals,
store front, online?)
As of right now, I am currently selling my designs on Redbubble, in
the form of prints, shirts, accessories, home décor, etc. (Link:
https://www.redbubble.com/people/DichotomyArts/shop) As far as taking
and requesting commissions goes, this can be done most efficiently
through my Instagram @DichotomyArts .However, I also have a TikTok,
Twitter, and Pinterest where I can additionally be reached, all
@DichotomyArts . I can design tattoos, business logos, wall art/décor,
all in my signature art style. You name it.

What do you feel sets you apart from other businesses?
I personally think that the execution and time that has been dedicated
into not only creating, but perfecting, an art style that is all my
own sets me apart dramatically. I have a genuine joy and interest in
what it is that do, and I utilize that as motivation to maintain my
uniqueness within my work. Whether it be the concept of the piece
itself, the shading, or even the fine and minute details, I have
strived from the beginning to create art that people could take one
look at and instantly recognize my brand, and I've successfully
managed to achieve that. At the end of the day, I know within myself
that creating these ink pieces for both myself and my clients fulfills
me in a way that nothing else could, so regardless if I'm selling
prints by the thousands or making one sale a year, I will never stop
creating. This is what I am meant to leave behind, and I think my
unconditional passion for what I do coupled with my love for bringing
artistic ideas to life for others will continue to set me aside, if
not my art style alone.
