AN INTERVIEW WITH
LEISURE HOUR
Spring 2023
How did you come up with the name?
Grace (our bassist) thought of “Athleisure” at first, and liked the phonetics of it but
didn’t want the band to be associated with sports. She then thought of “Leisure
Hour” which was a better representation of the mission of the band, which is to
create a space of freedom through music.

How would you describe your sound?
Leisure Hour is an emo band that pulls from midwest emo, dreamo, bubble
grunge, and pop punk. Almost like it MOBO and Beach Bunny had a music baby.

How did the members meet?
Grace (bassist) met Isaiah (guitarist) at their high-school play. They both acted in
Willy Wonka, and then went to Ball State where they met Raegan (drummer)
through friends of friends !!

If you had no choice but to become a cover band, who would you cover?
We would 100% be a Lemonade Mouth cover band. If you don’t know who that
is, it’s a disney channel band/movie that is ICONIC. We adore them.
How do you deal with creative block as a band? how do you continue to
come up with new sounds/ideas as a group?
We deal with creative blocks by talking things out and pushing through adversity
together. We’re really good at leaning on each other when we need to. Coming
up with new sounds usually happens in the studio, which usually occurs by
fucking around and finding out. We love loud things that make our ears go
“WOAH”

What is the hardest part about being in a band?
The hardest part about being in a band is keeping our heads up. So many people
our age have houses and families already. We’re living with our parents and
living poor. It’s a big sacrifice but we love it so much and believe in ourselves.

If your grandmother wrote a review on your band what would it most likely
say?
Our grandmas would review Leisure Hour as, “The most talented band in the
world, that will hopefully write happier songs in the future with less cussing.”

Which song of yours was the most fun to write & make?
“I Don’t Want This to End” was the most fun to write and make. It’s an unreleased
song on our upcoming album The Sunny Side. It was fun to make because we
wrote it at such a lovey-dovey time and were able to capture those emotions in a
special way. Raegan (drummer) also added a “swing” feel to the song that just
made it explode in such an energetic way.

What helps bond you as a band?
The struggle helps us bond, but mainly it’s the music keeping us together. We
love the art we create and perform. It just feels right, like we’re on the right path.
It’s easy to push forward when you work with people you love and trust and look
up to.
