AN INTERVIEW WITH
LUCIANA RILEY
Spring 2023
Who/what inspires your music?
honestly, a lot of what inspires my music lyrically is just my mental state at the time. i think
there’s kind of a fucked up duality with artists that some of your best art can come from your
worst moments and experiences, whether it’s toxic relationships or in my case gender dysphoria or depression. some songs are inspired by stories, or the experiences of others, for example one song i’m in the process of writing is inspired by the people that have been affected by musicians taking advantage of them, and using their fame and power to scare them into silence. i think there are a lot of things that people are too scared to write about or take a stance on in a song and i don’t ever want to think that way, i think every story needs to be told, even if it makes some people uncomfortable.

How did you come up with the name?
for my current band, i came up with the name after reading a book of the same title, i thought it was kinda cool how unassuming the name was for a book that deals with such heavy topics,
and i thought that it would be a cool vibe to carry over to the music i had started working on at
the time. i brought it to the other members and they liked it so it’s stuck ever since.

How would you describe your sound?
personally, i think i have a few different sides to my sound. i like to think of it as i’m a pop
songwriter brain inside a metal body, i like to work inside a structured framework with catchy
melodies and fun grooves that you can dance to, but still have the face melting kick ass
heaviness that metal is known for. it’s a hard balance to achieve, cause if you go too far one
way it can sound corny and overproduced, and if you go too far the other way it can be boring
and repetitive. we also like to bring in a lot of orchestral arrangements and layering and synthy
stuff to really just fill out a lot of sonic space and give the songs a lot of life and character.

If you had no choice but to become a cover artist, who would you cover?
that’s a great question actually, i’d probably have to go with i don’t know how but they found me, their basslines are so catchy and fun and as a bass player who sings, and loves playing in 2
piece scenarios with drummers i think it would be a really fun cover gig.

If someone wrote a book about your music, what would it be titled?
“what the fuck is wrong with you?”

Which song of yours was the most fun to write & make?
there are a lot of songs i love that i’ve written on my own, and also a lot of songs i love to play
that other people have written, but my favorite memories with songwriting are always when I'm collaborating with someone. one that i always think about is a song that me and my guitarist wrote about 2 years ago, which is now called NWFI. we were in my basement, sitting on these two parts that he wrote that i knew could make a great song. one part ended up becoming the verse, and the other ended up being the intro and the chorus. he initially didn’t like the verse part and wanted to trash it, but i insisted on using it so we jammed through it, at one point he even hopped on drums so i could work out a rhythm idea on guitar, and at the end of the day we ended up with the structure that made that song what it is today. i can’t wait to get it released so everyone can hear it, i’m super proud of that one.
