Sayuri Pastel (also known by their friends and fans as Yuri) is a multitalented non-binary artist, musician, gamer and cosplay artist. Since mid 2019, Yuri has indulged in the realm of music, creating a wide portfolio of work. Over the years Yuri had realized that music was a great outlet for their hardships and past traumas, pouring their energy into that passion.
Sayuri is a Filipino African American born in Salem Oregon. At a young age, they moved from Oregon to California where they resided for the rest of their childhood. Throughout their young years, they were introduced into gaming and anime early on and continued to play from childhood till now. As Yuri grew older they branched their interests further, landing them into mainstream music. Back in the early 2000’s their favorite mainstream artist was Aqua, the pop group that
created songs such as the famous ‘Barbie Girl’.
This evolved into finding underground artist Radio Gosha, which got them closer to their current favorite underground artists, Snafu and Tobias Dray. As Yuri has gotten further and further into the underground music scene as time went on - they began to start experimenting
with their own beats and instrumentals.
As they developed a love for music and making music, they had to also deal with the hardships of their life. Growing up, Yuri had to deal with being in the foster care system, bouncing around from home to home before finally settling as a young adult. Throughout their life, Yuri not only had to hold onto the difficult times in foster care, but also had to deal with constant abuse and mental decline.
As their mental health suffered, they began to develop different coping mechanisms; the main being art. Yuri continued to create, using it as a means of expressing their emotions that they couldn’t express verbally. This then blossomed into what Yuri does today.
Over the years, Yuri has been expressing themselves with their instrumentals, starting with their first album "Melancholy" which is described as ‘dark lofi instrumentals’. The album featured slow and deep beats that made one breathe and relax - or cry to feel better.
Over time their music genre grew more expressive as they expressed their disassociation and C-PTSD through Breakcore and dark melodic Synthcore. Along with the evolution of music came the evolution of their artwork, graphics and the creation of music videos.
Sayuri has consistently done their best to express their emotions and
mental stance that is always hard to express with just words.
Along with gaming and making music, Yuri also tends to hang out with their friends on Discord in their server where they post updates on music, Twitch stream info, first glances at new music and graphics, as well as a safe space for their fans, friends, and followers to express their own emotions and have a distraction from the world for a while. Currently Yuri has just released their new album
Butterfly Emotions which features heavy breakcore beats mixed in with soft synth wave, sharing some happiness within the hardship as they continue to grow and create a positive environment for themselves and others.
