AN INTERVIEW WITH
SLUMP
January 2024
How did you come up with the name?
We came up with the name because we had all just quit bands we weren't satisfied with, and we were all in proverbial musical "slump." I (Matt) had a lot of songs already prepared and finished and just wanted to jam them out with people. Luckily I knew Martín as a bassist and Tate as a drummer from other bands and we had jammed together before.
How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is dirty and guttural but we don't adhere to a single type of song, we try to vary the feel of each song while keeping the same visceral but tonally unique vibe.
How was the band formed? How/when did the members decide to start a band?
We have a lot of starting points for songs and we just kind of like to make noise and see where the song leads itself, throwing stuff at the wall and seeing if it sticks. If we can't come up with something after jamming for a while we'll just move onto something else for a while and come back later.
What is the hardest part about being in a band? What gets you through those times?
Managing money is probably the hardest part of being in a band. Driving out of town to shows gets pricey doing in even just twice a month, not to mention Tate and Martin driving to my house every week gets tough. The cost of merch and recording adds up too.
If your grandmother wrote a review on your band what would it most likely say?
Our grandmothers might probably say something along the lines of "¡Dios mio!"
Which song of yours was the most fun to write & make?
Overall our favorite song we made together is one off of our EP Wagon-man. We all had varied parts and ideas that somehow came together in a way we all really liked, and it has a lot of different feelings that it conjures up to each of us individually.
What helps bond you as a band?
As a band we like to hang around and shoot the shit after practice. We usually all just sit and cooldown and eat and mess with each other, and we're all pretty good friends.
If you had no choice but to become a cover band, who would you cover?
we'd probably cover our biggest inspiration, Rush.
