AN INTERVIEW WITH
WHERE WAS WAYNE
January 2024
Who/what inspires your music?
My main goal is to spark inspiration and share my experience through creativity. Some of the artists who inspired me are MF DOOM, Andre 3000, Mac Miller, and Mindless Self Indulgence. They each have such a unique mastery of their craft that I aspire to reach.
How would you describe your sound?
My sound is very diverse! I appreciate a lot of different genres and use that to create my own brand of LoFi Alternative music. From dance to Hiphop I’ve got a song for every mood all while staying authentic to me.
If you could open for any musician/band, who would it be?
Right now if I could choose to open for anyone I’d have to pick Tobi Lou. I think we’d put on a great show the people could take home!
What does making music mean to you? What got you into it/keeps you continuing?
Music has always been a huge influence in my life. Mom was always supportive of anything I put my mind to. At 6yrs old she got me a drum kit, later on I got into school band playing trumpet and tuba. I’ve always been the kid to fill up the pages in my journals. What really pushed me to pursue this was a project in 7th grade. My teacher Mr Richie had us host a poetry cafe. So I decided to burn the drop it like it’s hot instrumental by snoop and a DMX track on a blank CDROM. I freestyled for the class, and the love I got let me know I was meant for this. Now it’s my mission to take that feeling to the world.
How do you keep yourself motivated and inspired - how do you deal with creative blocks?
What keeps me motivated is my inherent curiosity, and simply how important it is to be able to resonate with with complete strangers. I still remember my first time hearing Faces by Mac Miller, that tape really carried me through. So if my art could be that for anyone I owe to us to try my best. When I face a block I take a step back and focus more on where I want to go rather than what I’m doing. If that doesn’t work take a break, it’s not the end of the world.
Which song of yours was the most fun to write & make?
So far I’ve had the most fun making was “Wildin” prod. by Kayri Kayzer. It was just me being free! It’s a tribute to my late grandpa in gratitude of all he’s blessed me with. The energy is through the roof!

What is your creative process like? Is it more organized & session based or more sporadic and fleeting?
I’d say my process is more sporadic. Being a freestyle artist I don’t know what I’ll do until it’s done. Even if I have a premeditated idea I’m never married to it. This approach doesn’t bar me from genuine expression. I naturally tend to overthink, but you can’t let that stop you.
What is your current big goal? What does the future hold/what are you working towards right now?
As of now, my next big goal is to keep building a fan base and lock in my first tour! If I can say anything for certain is that more music, content, and growth is on the way! I don’t know what the future holds but I plan to be consistent and prepared for it nonetheless.
